Generation

In the late hours of the night, you receive an SOS message blinking through the infinite void of space.

You connect your terminal to the source of the signal - a Generation Ship carrying its human cargo on a multi-generational journey through the stars.

Something has gone wrong - horribly wrong - and you must intervene in a last-ditch effort to save the ship.

This game was created for a university game jam in 2020. I think the theme was something like "Running out of time."

My original idea was a text-based game using Ren'Py with RiveScript. Turning Ren'Py into a text game engine went well enough, but integrating it with RiveScript ended up being a headache. Eventually, I wrote my own very simple "if-else" style parser, just to make it in under the submission time. I also decided to use an accessibility feature to make TTS work - which unfortunately has drawbacks, mainly that the volume can't be controlled.

Honestly, while the game ended up much shorter and simpler than I originally envisioned, I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm tempted to give this idea another shot someday, with a proper parser and a longer story.
